Flake casting, also known as strip casting, is a rapid-solidification process used to produce high-quality metal flakes that serve as the feedstock for sintered or bonded neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) permanent magnets.

The process is specifically designed to control microstructure, improve magnetic performance, and reduce segregation compared to conventional ingot casting. The alloy is melted under vacuum or protective gas and poured through a tundish onto a rapidly rotating water-cooled metal wheel, forming thin metal flakes from 0.2 to 0.6 mm in thickness. The resulting material exhibits excellent microstructural consistency and provides an optimal feedstock for the further magnet manufacturing process chain.
