Nucor Steel Darlington orders VD unit from INTECO
Nucor is one of the largest and most diversified steel producers of North America. Since many years INTECO PTI has been a reliable supplier for innovative steel plant components to various Nucor plants and now it is a great honour for the INTECO headquarter in Austria to deliver steel refining technology to the American steel giant.
In October 2019, Nucor placed an order for a single station vacuum degasser with INTECO for its mill in Darlington, South Carolina. The heat size of the new plant is 120 short tons and will be equipped with a mechanical vacuum pump system. INTECO’s advanced system design ensures short pump down times and pressure curves adapted to each steel grade. A special feature is the design of the vacuum cover with a central socket for all kinds of access such as sampling, temperature and hydrogen measurement. This cover concept follows INTECO’s approach of „zero leakage design“ to minimize treatment times and to increase efficiency. Equipment delivery shall be finalized within less than one year and the first heat is expected until end of 2020. This project is definitely a major milestone in INTECO’s history as it represents the very first big steel making installation for such a renowned customer in the US and definitely is a door opener for future projects to come in North America.
In addition to this contract, Nucor decided to equip the steel mill in Darlington with INTECO’s automatic gas coupling system – the ultimate solution for safe operation.
A chemical energy package including JetBOxesTM and Burners for Darlington’s Consteel EAF perfects INTECO’s successful partnership with Nucor. The installation is scheduled for March 2020 and expected to reduce electrical energy consumption and tap-to-tap time of the EAF.
